On Thursday, October 26, 2017, President Donald Trump pledged that "we will overcome addiction in America," declaring opioid abuse a national public health emergency and announcing new steps to combat what he described as the worst drug crisis in U.S. history.
The President didn't declare the crisis a "national emergency;” but instead a "public health emergency." SouthLight’s CEO, Dr. Tad Clodfelter, states the main difference in nomenclature is that “a national emergency would have created a path for the rapid release of federal money to address the problem. It would free up grand money and ease regulations that can complicate addiction services, but he said the declaration doesn't go as far as declaring a national emergency would have.” Click the link to learn more.
